No 603 'Halcyon' sold |
march 2000 Carving No. 603 Carved from one large piece of lime with two smaller pieces jointed to the back of the work to give it visual balance, all mounted on a walnut base carved to represent the splashes and ripples made as the kingfisher leaves the water. The ancient Greeks called the kingfisher 'Halcyon' and Greek legend had it that the kingfisher nested at sea, and had the power to calm waves and quell stormy winds. This piece has a marvellous sense of calm, as its title suggests, the kingfisher, with caught fish in its beak rises gracefully past a small clump of marsh plants growing in the water. The Kingfisher is painted with watercolour to do justice to its vibrant colouring, the delicate flowers in the carving are also painted, again to help the visual balance of the piece. The whole carving took approximately 280 hours to complete. It is extremely intricate and very finely carved. |
